Fireside review of the Kindling Cracker Firewood Splitter

Selection Criteria, Usage and Conclusion

Summary:  Use wood to make fires.  Use smaller wood and paper to start a fire.  Unless you can split firewood like Captain America in the 2015 film “Avengers: Age of Ultron”, you probably are going to want to use some tools.  You can use splitting axe, wedges or mauls to break up the big stuff.  Setting or aiming those implements might get tricky when you’re trying to down to the little stuff.  A stationary wood splitter like the one mentioned in this review is perfect for taking the medium and small stuff and making it even smaller stuff. When cleaning up a piece of property, you don’t get to choose the types of wood you are going to be cutting down.

Review of use:  In this case, it was a nice pack of arborvitae hiding right by the corner of a house.  The wood could have just been waste, or it could be chance to test out a new tool and enjoy some rather mild Michigan winter evening having a few fires! In this case, we’d be using a small portable fire pit, namely the Pyro Case MINI – Portable Fire Pit Camp Fire.

Given the size, we couldn’t just toss large chunks of wood in there, and that doesn’t normally make for a great fire anyway. It’s been a few months since the wood was cut down.  A splitting axe was used to break it into piece that will easily fit into the Kindling Cracker. Solid, 10 pounds of iron formed into a shape that makes quick work of splitting wood.    The Kindling Cracker, a hammer and some wood are all you need.  It’s nice when a product just works as expected.

Conclusion:  We started with our mentioned pile of wood from the clean-up efforts.  From there, we broke it down a little further with a splitting axe and then down to kindling using the Kindling Cracker! The Kindling Cracker, a hammer and some wood are all you need. Those smaller pieces are ready for the fire! We found that just tossing everything in the burn box didn’t lead to the best fire.  Or perhaps the wood stacking is just fun, but you can see the wonderful collection of smaller pieces are produced by the Kindling Cracker.

Pros

  • Well constructed tool that works exactly like you would expect
  • Appears to avoid some of the design elements that seem to cause problems in similar products
    • Solid iron instead of tube construction
    • No assembly or pivot points that could be weak points.

Cons

  • If you wanted to take it traveling with you, it has one shape and size.
  • If you put in a piece of wood that is the size of the opening, it could get jammed up as it splits (So, don’t do that)
